For America’s 250th birthday, Fiesta Productions set out to create a Rose Parade float that felt less like a static monument and more like a living emblem of the country’s past, present, and future. In partnership with America250, the bipartisan commission created by Congress to lead the Semiquincentennial, they conceived “Soaring Onward Together,” a float crowned by three monumental bald eagles sweeping over mountains, waterfalls, and richly detailed American landscapes in the 137th Rose Parade on January 1, 2026. To transform those eagles from sculpted icons into a dynamic enterpiece capable of carrying the story to millions of viewers, Fiesta entrusted Rando Productions with the design, engineering, fabrication, and programming of the soaring figures.

From the outset, the creative brief for Rando centered on one goal: make the eagles feel truly alive. Each bird spans roughly 18 feet wingtip to wingtip, a scale chosen to dominate the float’s skyline and to give Fiesta’s floral team a dramatic canvas for hundreds of intricately crafted feathers, each designed to integrate rice‑sized materials, ti leaves, seeds, and pods into a shimmering, textural surface. As the float moves along Colorado Boulevard, the three eagles appear to glide in formation over an idealized American wilderness, visually echoing America250’s message of resilience, unity, and “soaring onward” into the next 250 years.

Delivering that illusion of natural flight required a mechanical solution as expressive as the sculpted forms themselves. Rando developed a sophisticated electro‑servo hydraulic system that animates all three birds, giving each eagle four axes of articulated motion: the head turns side to side, the neck lifts and dips, the body rolls subtly to suggest banking, and the wings drive broad, powerful flaps. A 6‑cylinder industrial gasoline engine driving a 32‑gallon‑per‑minute hydraulic pump provides the muscle behind every movement, translating horsepower into smooth, coordinated motion across the entire flock. Inside each eagle, welded steel and aluminum structures, modeled in SolidWorks, carry loads, preserve clearances, and protect mechanisms, while pencil‑steel rod armatures extend outward to tie the moving skeleton into Fiesta’s sculpted exterior without sacrificing performance.

At the heart of the experience is a custom Rando show control system built on Weigl Controls ProCommander hardware, combining robust commercial electronics with Rando’s in‑house motion programming. A timeline‑based animation controller manages both speed and position for every axis across all three eagles, allowing the team to craft performances that feel fluid rather than mechanical. A dedicated feedback system closes the loop on each motion, so programmers can choreograph every head tilt, neck lift, roll, and wingbeat to land precisely on cue with the musical score, ensuring the eagles’ performance remains locked to the soundtrack from parade broadcast to Floatfest showcase.

Behind the scenes, Rando’s scope spanned the full life cycle of the effect. The project began with concept sketches and motion intent studies that explored how the birds should behave in context with Fiesta’s broader float design, then progressed into detailed engineering, 3D CAD modeling, and motion feasibility analysis. Scaled and

3D‑printed models helped validate motion paths and proportions before steel was cut, while CNC‑ and waterjet‑fabricated components anchored the final mechanisms. Each eagle system was fully assembled and tested off the float, then transported to Fiesta’s facility for integration, control commissioning, and final on‑site tuning so the flock could perform as a unified, cinematic effect on parade day. The result is a signature Rose Parade moment: three soaring eagles that fuse artistry, precision engineering, and patriotic storytelling into a single, unforgettable expression of America250’s milestone celebration.
